Student Work Experience – Future Fisheries Scientists

Throughout the course of last summer, Carcinus Ltd were engaged in numerous freshwater fisheries and ecological studies involving protected species monitoring, habitat mapping and electric fishing. This gave us the ideal opportunity to partner with Sparsholt University Centre to offer students the chance of gaining some practical work experience.

With all the relevant permissions and licences in place, students were invited to join us on an electric fishing survey. Guidance and professional steer in relation to health & safety matters, equipment, technique and sampling procedures was provided throughout by our highly experienced aquatic ecologists.

Tuition was also given to further the students fish identification and data recording skills along with an explanation of how data will be used to inform the final report and deliver the project objectives. Throughout the surveys, we were keen to demonstrate how a sound scientific knowledge is applied within a commercial setting.

Following the success of the project, we hope to offer more students the chance to join us during this year’s season.
