Intertidal Ecology Surveys for the Port of Dover

In early 2024 Carcinus Ltd was contracted by the Port of Dover to complete biannual intertidal ecology surveys of the littoral zones of several sites in Dover. The purpose of these marine ecology surveys is to identify flora and fauna across the sites, and to monitor sediment coverage. The project is part of the Port of Dover’s ongoing environmental stewardship of the marine resources within the Port’s area of authority.

Ecological Survey of the Intertidal Zone

Accurate Positioning of Intertidal Quadrat

Senior Marine Ecology Consultant Joshua Baker and Marine Ecologist Antonia Davis completed the first set of surveys, in the form of Phase I intertidal ecology surveys with additional sediment coverage monitoring, in early May 2024.

We utilised our Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) equipment (pictured) which allowed us to map out key features of the intertidal zone with up to 1 cm positional accuracy, ensuring repeatability of the survey for accurate monitoring of change in the future.

Following the survey, our marine ecological consultants used the data collected in the field to produce a technical report detailing the methods used and key findings. We look forward to sharing the results.

As part of company standard practice, all necessary permissions were gained in advance of survey operations. Detailed work plan and project-specific risk assessments were compiled prior to the survey and agreed with the client.

Carcinus Ltd will be returning to Dover in Autumn to complete this years biannual set of surveys; with more surveys to be undertaken in subsequent years.
